Our Partnership with Archivi.ng

At Free Knowledge Africa (FKA), our mission is to make knowledge freely accessible and ensure Africa’s rich history and cultural heritage remain open to all. We are thrilled to announce our strategic partnership with Archivi.ng, a pioneering platform focused on the digitization and preservation of historical records, including newspapers.

Through this collaboration, FKA and Archivi.ng aim to bridge the gap between historical documentation and digital accessibility, ensuring that vital records, cultural materials, and archives are preserved for future generations.

Why This Partnership Matters

Nigeria has a vast and diverse history recorded in various formats—from oral traditions to physical archives housed in libraries, government institutions, and private collections. Unfortunately, many of these valuable records face threats such as deterioration, limited accessibility, and even complete loss due to inadequate preservation.Through this partnership, Free Knowledge Africa and Archivi.ng will focus on:

1. Digitization & Preservation of Historical Records

Using modern digitization techniques, we will convert physical documents, manuscripts, and historical records into digital formats. This initiative will enable scholars, researchers, and the general public to access valuable information online, eliminating geographical limitations and restricted access.

2. Promoting Open Knowledge & Public Domain Awareness

A major challenge in historical preservation is accessibility. Many valuable archives remain locked behind paywalls or restricted to specific institutions. Our partnership will advocate for open access policies, ensuring knowledge is freely available for education, research, and cultural appreciation.

3. Community Engagement & Collaboration

Beyond digitization, this partnership fosters a community-driven approach to knowledge sharing. We will engage librarians, historians, researchers, and knowledge enthusiasts to contribute to the documentation and dissemination of historical materials.

What’s Next?

This partnership marks the beginning of a long-term effort to preserve and share Nigeria’s historical knowledge in ways that benefit researchers, students, and the wider public. In the coming months, we will roll out:

  • Digitization projects in select archives and libraries
  • Open access initiatives to improve public engagement with historical records
  • Training programs to empower communities with digital preservation skills
  • Advocacy campaigns promoting historical knowledge and awareness

We are also setting aside funds to support capstone projects by educators, empowering them to create Open Educational Resources (OERs) based on digitized historical materials.
